With everything that happens in the spring and depending on what Utah received in snow and rain will greatly affect your trees and other vegetation come summer. With longer and much warmer temperatures in the summer months, it's important to keep a watchful eye on your trees, making sure they are healthy for these often hot and lengthy days ahead. Most people are unaware that trees in the heat can essentially shut down in the hottest days because of the lack of water. This is because trees need to conserve their energy. This makes it that much more important to perform regular check-ups on your beloved trees and shrubs. Look at branches that may not be baring leaves. Did a recent high wind day break any branches? These are very obvious indicators that certain action needs to be taken. You just have to be sure what you are doing beforehand.
An incorrect pruning or trimming can cause more harm than good to the shrubs or trees. Also, notice if there are any insects that weren't there from the previous year. For the most part insects and trees get along great, but if there are seem to be damage to a tree or it is looking dead in certain areas, it might be time to call an expert to inspect what is happening. For example: box beetles can do damage on a tree but often times this can be out of site to the human eye. These types of beetles can reside under the surface and bid their time. They can lay eggs under the bark of the tree making the tree much more distressed. Once the eggs hatch, the new hatchlings eat away at the tree from the inside. This will disturb the trees ability to properly absorb nutrient.
After just a couple years a lot of the damage is done. These beetles can move to the next tree and start the whole process again. This is why inspections are so important to perform throughout the year, season-by-season. But, it's especially to check trees in the hot summer months, as this is when these beetles thrive. With the current drought in Utah it has become exceedingly important, as many trees in this region have fallen to this invasive bug. With continued drought plaguing our great state, it's more important than ever to provide your trees with enough water to weather the beetles. In most cases it's recommended to water your trees at least once a week, giving the tree truck and ground surrounding it a good soak.
